I am currently reading Post Office by Bukowski
and LOVING IT (Kim, you’ll be glad to hear.)
So I’m going to put up a post for every new book I’m reading
because more regular use might help me to contribute
and ALSO
with all these hours of commuting in and out to Uni
I find myself with lots of time to read!
And I’m enjoying that.
I’ve never been a fan of Bukowski’s–technically he’s not a strong writer, something he manages to hide in the “grittiness” and “realism” of his literary efforts. I prefer his poetry, where he keeps a tighter rein on his bad habits. In terms of gritty writers who write far better, can I plug Seth Morgan’s HOMEBOY and Abraham Rodriguez’s SPIDERTOWN and THE BUDDHA BOOK? Have you heard the Modest Mouse song about Bukowski? It’s quite good…
You most certainly can, and thank you.
Whether he’s a strong writer or not I enjoyed it,
as is evidenced by my ploughing through it in 2 days.
Fair enough it’s not a long book but still.
I haven’t heard it. I shall have to investigate.
I never got into Bukowski, either. But people who read it are generally pretty gosh durn cool!
Haha,
I’ll assume you’re not being sarcastic
and take that as a complement.
You were right, I was happy to hear that.
I read Post Office quickly too!!!
I enjoyed it. Bukowski is who he is. No frills. That is what I like about him.
I think the story is that John Martin (St. Martin’s Press) asked him if he would write a novel for him and like three days later or something Bukowski called him up and was like, “Come and get it” and Martin asked him, “Come and get what?” and he replied, “my book”. That makes me laugh.
I’m working on a book and I’ve completed two chapters in the last month.
But hey, at least I’m writing it.
Thanks for this Ben. Made my day.
